EC Chess Challengers Championship 🏆

  • To qualify for the championship event, players must have played in at least 3 chess challengers qualifier tournaments and scored 35 or more qualifier points.
  • The championship event offers significant prizes to the winners.
  • Only players 18 years or younger are eligible to participate in the high school tournaments.
  • There are two age group sections: u/18 for students aged 18 or younger, and u/15 for students aged 15 or younger.
  • Qualifier Points scoring system:
    • 1st place – 25 points
    • 2nd place – 18 points
    • 3rd place – 12 points
    • 4th place to 9 points
    • 5th place – 9 points
    • 6th place to 10th – 7 points
    • 10th 20th – 5 points
    • 21st and below – 3 points
  • The qualifier events are OPEN to all students. Only the Championship event at the end of the year will be invitation-based!
  • The local organisation committee (LOC) will invite players with enough points from qualifier events and other players may be invited on different criteria based on LOC’s discretion.
  • The Chess Challengers Championship event is scheduled to take place in December, and further information will be provided in due course.

Tournament Details

The ultimate chess challenge for high school students born in 2005 or later.

 

Join the Fun!

  • Do you want your child to test their chess skills, make friends and grow their mind?
  • Then sign them up for our chess tournament!
  • Up to 80 players ONLY, register today whilst there’s still space! 

What your child should get out of this experience: 

  • Play chess in a competitive setting and stand a chance to win a medal!
  • Interact with like-minded kids and make friends!
  • Have fun while developing their minds in the ultimate chess challenge!

 

Details for the next event:

  • Date: Saturday, 22 July 2023
  • Venue: Pinelands North Primary School, Richmond Ave, Pinelands,  7405
  • Cost: R200 for both U/18 and U/15 sections.
  • Time: 9:00am Round 1 begins; 4:00pm Prize-giving
  • Breaks: There are short breaks (5 – 10mins) between rounds.

 

Format: 

  • This tournament is a ‘Swiss’ competition (approximately 6 rounds).
  • This means that all players play 6 games and no-one is ‘knocked out’ of the tournament.
  • The tournament is restricted to players under 18 years of age.
  • The time limit is 25 minutes + 5 seconds increment per player for the entire game. 
  • This tournament will not be rated by Chess South Africa.

 

Prizes: 

  • Medals and chess books will be given for 1st Place, 2nd Place & 3rd Place in both U/18 and U/15 sections.
  • Best female player wins a medal in both U/18 and U/15 sections.
  • All participants will be emailed a participation chess certificate from Elite Chess Academy, signed by National Chess Instructor Dione Goredema!
